Hythe Rock the Pier festival returns
A POPULAR Waterside music festival is set to return on Saturday to raise cash for Hythe’s historic pier.
Rock the Pier 2021 will run from 10am to 5pm featuring live music from Trav Cats, The Soulcatchers, The One Offs, REMbrandt and Wire JD.
Organised by Hythe Pier Heritage Association, the hugely popular local music showcase was launched in 2018, when it raised £5,000 towards the restoration of the town’s Victorian pier and iconic railway. The attraction, which was recently granted Grade II listed building status, then benefited from a further £7,500 raised during the 2019 event.
However, the Covid pandemic meant the 2020 event was called off and this year the festival has been relocated to the arena on the promenade behind Hythe High Street. The main stage will be positioned with the pier and its 99 years old working railway operating in the backdrop.
Music will begin at 10am with a showcase from Wire JD, followed by REM tribute band REMbrandt, next up will be When Harri met Alli, a duo singing both classic and modern covers.
Headlining the event are the popular New Forest old time skiffle and folk band The Trav Cats. Other highlights include bluesman Bob Long, 10-piece soul and funk band the Soulcatchers, a solo performer Sophie Louise Penwill and a set from three-piece local band the One-Offs.
Hythe Pier Heritage Association spokesperson Alan Titheridge said: “Hopefully the atmosphere of the two previous events along with the splendid weather that blessed both, can be repeated, with Rock the Pier 2021 lifting the spirits of the local community, whilst at the same time raising much needed funds for the continuing restoration of our pier and railway.
