BBLOC’s latest show Annie is on stage at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre
STARS of the future are in the spotlight this week at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre as the utterly delightful cast of BBLOC present the rags-to riches musical Annie.
Set in 1930s New York, Annie tells the story of the young orphan whose unfailing optimism sees her propelled into a brand new life of unimaginable opulence after she is invited to spend Christmas with the billionaire industrialist Oliver Warbucks . From the opening scenes in the orphanage, the young ensemble sing and dance beautifully, particularly for the show's best known hit It's A Hard Knock Life.
Playing the title role on the night of our visit was the exceptionally talented Zanthie Lock, who possessed all the sass and single minded determination of the irrepressible young orphan. With a fantastic voice and lots of charisma, she and the entire cast of young performers demonstrated wonderful stage presence and superb dance moves throughout.
But it wasn’t just the junior cast members who captivated - Sally Wheeler as the formidable orphanage boss Miss Hannigan combined a comedy moments with her villainous side to deliver a wonderfully rich and high-energy performance.
Jonathan Busk was perfectly cast as Annie’s billionaire guardian Oliver Warbucks, whose priorities and outlook visibly shifted as his attachment to Annie grew. Kayleigh Jones was lovely as his kind hearted and efficient personal secretary Grace Farrell.
Based in New York during the Great Depression, the storyline deviates between themes of hardship and hope, with insights into the political situation at the time. The supporting cast - including the brilliant double act of John Bishop and Sophie Adnett as Annie’s fake parents Rooster and Lily St Regis, where universally strong.
Staging was aptly designed to seamless transition from the stark and unwelcoming orphanage to the ghettos of the city, a radio studio, the White House and the opulence of Mr Warbuck’s mansion. The use of a real life dog - four year old Teddy the adorable Cockapoo to play Annie's best friend Sandy also added a heartwarming element to the show.
With a solid reputation for delivering exceptional amateur shows, BBLOC’s latest production is another triumph. Catch Annie at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre until Saturday - its a perfect half term treat for the whole family. For tickets visit https://www.bournemouthpavilion.co.uk
