Penguin Cafe, Lighthouse Poole
PENGUIN Café will be at Lighthouse Poole performing music from the Penguin Café Orchestra.
Celebrating the unique avant pop sound which has captivated audiences worldwide, Penguin Cafe is bringing the music of the legendary Penguin Cafe Orchestra back to life this year with a series of shows this year.
Arthur Jeffes founded Penguin Cafe in 2009, bringing together a talented and disparate group of musicians, including members of Suede and Gorillaz to perform his late father Simon’s legacy of world-renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra music. Soon after, he began to create new music, with the philosophy of his father always in mind.
With a beguiling blend of melodic instrumental pop, absorbing folk, minimalism, and world music influences, Penguin Café Orchestra had a knack of producing catchy of ear-worms, much loved by advertisers, including Telephone and Rubber Band, Perpetuum Mobile, and Music for a Found Harmonium.
Now, the son of founder member Simon Jeffes, Arthur’s collective recreates their signature sound, performing a collection of PCO classics – a slice of ’70s musical counterculture recreated for the 2020s.
Outside of Penguin Cafe, Arthur’s composition work has included several shorts and commissions. He worked with Greenpeace and Aardman Animations to compose the soundtrack for the award winning Turtle Journey, released in 2020 to promote the Greenpeace Protect the Ocean campaign.
Arthur will be performing solo piano versions of Penguin Cafe music plus other original compositions.
Penguin Café performs music from the Penguin Café Orchestra live at Lighthouse Poole on Sunday 1st June at 7.45pm. Tickets are £32.45. For more information and bookings visit www.lighthousepoole.co.uk or contact the box office on 01202 280000.
