A MOTORIST escaped serious injury after his car careered off a road and ploughed into a pole in Holbury.

Firefighters responded to the collision involving a black Ford Fiesta which took place on Ipers Bridge shortly before 7.30pm on Saturday amid concerns its driver was trapped inside.

However, the man is understood to have climbed free by the time the crews from Hardley and Beaulieu arrived, and they were needed only to secure the scene.

Paramedics assessed him at the scene, but no injuries were reported.

A post on Twitter afterwards by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from Hardley and Beaulieu made safe an RTC [road traffic collision] involving one car and a telegraph pole (spoiler alert – the pole usually comes off best).

“A male casualty was assessed by [South Central Ambulance Service] at the scene.”
