The alarm was raised around 5pm on Saturday, with reports the vehicle was stuck close to Moyles Court in Rockford, near Ringwood, as torrential rain lashed the area.

Crews from Ringwood, Fareham and Redbridge joined forces to free five trapped people and return them to dry land.

Posting on Twitter afterwards, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service urged motorists to be extra cautious when travelling in adverse weather and not take any chances.

“Please, please, be careful. If you are not sure how deep the water is don’t risk it. Highways are now closing the road to prevent further incidents,” the tweet said.

It comes weeks after four people were rescued when the driver of the Mercedes tried to cross the swollen Mill Lawn Brook watersplash in Forest Road, Burley. The vehicle’s engine cut out during the attempt.
